Magnetic Bracelets Show The Power Of Attraction
December 9, 2004By Jean Patteson, Sentinel Columnist
Question: My granddaughters in Atlanta tell me they’d like magnetic bracelets for Christmas, but I’ve had no luck tracking down anything like that in Orlando. Can you help?
Answer: Magnetic bracelets are the latest costume jewelry craze. To make the bracelets, magnetic beads are interspersed with regular beads on a long string. When the string is wrapped around the wrist (or neck or ankle), the magnetic beads stick together to form a bracelet (or choker or anklet).
You can find the bracelets at American Modern Jewelry, 2912 Corrine Drive, Orlando. The store is operated by David and Liz Kazyk, who make the popular bracelets using magnetic hematite beads and a variety of other beads. The bracelets come in 21 inch and 36 inch lengths, costing $29 and $39 respectively.
If you’d like to create your own designs for your granddaughters, you’re in luck: The store also offers beading lessons. For details, call 407 894 8941.
MORE COOL TEEN GIFTS
Q: I am a newly divorced dad with no clue about gift shopping for my 13 year old daughter this holiday season. I see her every other weekend, but I really don’t know what she likes. Any suggestions?
A: How about some of the magnetic bracelets mentioned above? Or you could use one of your weekend visits to go window shopping with your daughter. As you stroll through the mal Oakley Sunglasses l, ask her to show you her favorite shops and point out gifts on her wish list. Take notes as you go, then return to the mall later to make your gift selections.
If you can’t fit in a visit to the mall, here are some suggestions for cool gifts gleaned from the teen magazines: belts with sparkles or ribbon ties; oblong shaped purses; gloves and slipper socks with fake fur trim; ponchos; corduroy blazers; novelty watches with trendy pink or green bands; and lip gloss sets. Especially popular is the Super Shimmer Set from Sephora, which contains seven top selling glosses.
MACHO DIAPER BAGS
Q: My husband is besotted with our new baby son, but he draws the line at carrying my cute Peter Rabbit diaper bag. He says it makes him feel like a girly man. Instead, he shoves all Rory’s stuff into his old gym bag. It looks more macho, but everything gets all jumbled together diapers, bottles, wipes, etc. Does anyone make diaper bags for dads?
A: Well, yes and no. Some manufacturers are making diaper bags in darker (read: macho) colors but are sticking with traditional tote bag designs. One exception is the Marshall bag. It looks like a sleek backpack and can be worn over the shoulder or across the body, bandoleer style.
The bag comes in five colors, including yellow, red and bl Oakley Sunglasses ack. It has plenty of pockets; an insulated, waterproof snack pack; a changing pad; and two external bottle pockets. Also, just for Dad, on the strap is a dual cell phone/MP3 holder. Dec. 19.
The event is a fund raiser for Orlando’s Lisa Merlin House, which provides residential and outpatient treatment for women, children and families recovering from alcoholism and substance abuse. Individual tickets are $50, tables of 10 are $500. For reservations, call 407 292 0109.
Lost: Two readers are searching for favorite fragrances. Nellie Yunker of Leesburg is looking for L’Effleur cologne spray by Coty. And a reader from Melbourne is trying to locate a men’s fragrance called Anton, distributed by Continental Fragrances.
