Man fined 450 for trying to steal from elderly shopper

Ionut Curte (22) was found guilty after Dublin District Court heard he tried to hide the activities of an alleged female accomplice who put her hand into the victim’s handbag.

They were both caught by undercover gardai and arrested.

Curte, with an address at Old Cabra Road, had pleaded not guilty to attempted Oakley Vault theft at O’Co Oakley Vault nnell Bridge last November 27. The court heard gardai Fiona Deevey and Jillian Moran were on plain clothes patrol when they saw the accused and a woman walking at 7.15pm.

The pair were paying “particular attention” to people carrying backpacks and handbags.

Two elderly women were making their way from Westmoreland Street to O’Connell Bridge, carrying shopping bags, and one of them also had a small handbag over her shoulder.

The pair approached them from behind and the woman used her scarf to conceal the fact that she opened the victim’s bag and had her hand inside it.

The defendant “kept positioning his body in such a manner as to obscure her activities”.

The gardai believed the tw Oakley Vault o were acting in concert and stopped them. Curte had previous convictions for similar offences in Italy.

A warrant had been issued for the arrest of his alleged accomplice.

Judge Hugh O’Donnell fined Curte 300 for the attempted theft, with another 150 fine for a separate charge of failing to appear in court on a previous date.
