An bank robber who claimed to be armed with an explosive device was shot by Toronto Police who were outside waiting for him yesterday.

Police arrived at the scene before the bandit carrying two bags left the Royal Bank branch at 5080 Sheppard Ave. just west of Markham Rd. and was shot possibly three times in the chest, shoulder and abdomen outside the front door.

The man, believed to be in his 40s and whose identity was not released, was taken to Sunnybrook hospital under police guard with life threatening injuries and expected to undergo emergency surgery.

Small orange pylons marked the area last night amid howling wind and blowing wet snow as police continued their investigation.
